“The viewer sees the artist’s face from a low perspective, his head tilted and his mouth slightly open, as though he is about to speak. A strong horizontal element behind him implies an indistinct and ambiguous space while it also thrusts his head forward and creates drama. Lighting directs the viewer to the face, which is carefully formed with subtle passages of light and dark muted colors…. Here, the aging artist’s fierce expression is accompanied by a hint of subdued rage.”
“Soundtrack1″ was the first piece of music I recorded after I was asked to score Desolation Wilderness. I hadn’t seen a script and nothing had been shot yet. Robby gave me a bare-bones synopsis of the movie and asked me to do something kind of folk-y with traditional instruments. I put together this brooding, rustic, rough sketch to let him hear what I was initially thinking. Just knowing the title, Desolation Wilderness, was probably the main catalyst for a lot of what I recorded over the next few months.
